Zhuang Hui: Lost Cause

2013.05.08 - 06.18

The shocking pink and blue velour drapes that bifurcate Arrow factory's front window are the daytime manifestations of Zhuang Hui's new work Lost Cause. Each day at dusk strobe lighting behind the curtains comes to life, transforming these static colors into a mysterious, yet silent disco lightshow, causing fleeting shadows to dance sporadically upon the windows. An experiment in pure visual abstraction, Lost Cause distills the colors and materials of vernacular culture to tap into a reaction that is purely physical and visceral.

Zhuang's previous works are notable for their explorations of narrative and personal history. From reproducing factory machinery out of Styrofoam (Factory Floor, 2003) to running a small photo studio in Yumen, Gansu that serviced the local villagers (Yumen, 2008-2009), Zhuang's work delves into the complex layers of memory and nostalgia. In Lost Cause, Zhuang consciously rejects signifiers of time and remembrance to create an experience within Arrow Factory's hutong that is rootless and devoid of historical markers.

Zhuang Hui (b. 1963, Yumen, Gansu) is a visual artist that frequently works with photography and installation. He has participated in solo and group exhibitions in China and abroad, including The 9th Shanghai Biennial (2012), The Real Thing at Tate Modern, Liverpool (2007), the The 4th Guangzhou Trienniale, Guangdong Museum of Art, Guangdong (2012), the Groninger Museum, Groninger (2008), and the Three Shadows Photography Art Center in Beijing (2009).
